The Prize offered by New Lights is open to young, emerging artists who are living or have trained in the North of England. For these purposes, the North of England is defined as being the historic counties of Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire.

Entrants must be painters aged between 23 and 35.

Pieces short-listed for the Valeria Sykes Prize must be available for judging and sale at a public exhibition in September-December 2011.
